Thick Description of the First Day of Class
The evening was growing dark when I entered Communication 708. Discussion had already begun concerning the class parameters.
The discussion grew from personal comments of the students concerning their backgrounds beginning with their positioning in the PhD program. Further discussion was drawn from individual interests, past research involvement, and their aspirations for the class.
The instructor used these avenues to blend her course objectives with the individual histories of the students. This was accomplished by follow up discussions concerning the students’ discussion points.
The syllabus was also used as a point of generating discussion. This included a discussion of the general course direction, the blogging method of interaction, and the handling of the various assignments.
The class then moved into an interactive example of the new blogging method of interpersonal discussion. The class then discussed new times for class.
